In a time where we can go outside only for essentials, a quick trip to a museum or gallery for a bit of inspiration is out of the question. I actually never realised how much I relied on taking a little stroll down to the Nottingham Contemporary for a browse and open my eyes up to something new. Whereas now, sat in the same four walls, inspiration isn’t the same and I’m feeling a little demotivated. Of course, we have good old Instagram and I am very thankful we do have various social media platforms supplying the inspo, however sometimes, Instagram is a little toxic. I’ve touched on this a couple blog posts back (click here to read), but I’ll just reiterate the fact that Instagram at the minute is full of influencers telling us what we should be doing with our time. And ultimately, when I’m lying in bed at 4pm not having done much with my day, I don’t want to be seeing a workout I should supposedly doing, and ultimately making me feel very guilty. On a lighter note, I’ve turned my university Instagram (@goose.fashion) into a place for the best inspo in all different fields, collages, graphic design, architecture, moodboards, and just general good stuff. So that’s fun. However, one place I’ve turned to and have really been enjoying is magazines. Now I’ve always loved a good magazine but never actually taken the plunge to get subscriptions and actually browse and keep up to date with what’s out there. Of course, I started with the classic British Vogue subscription. I won’t lie, I mainly did this because there was an offer on, and I couldn’t resist. However, a magazine arriving to my door and flicking through it for an hour or so is a really nice start to my day. It gives a nice overview of fashion at the moment as well as a little distraction from reality, which I think everyone could do with now and again.
Stereotypical for a fashion student’s first magazine exposure to be Vogue but hey ho, we have to start somewhere. This led me onto ordering what will be an iconic cover in the future, the April 2020 issue of Vogue Italia. I spoke about this a couple posts back (click here if you want to read) but I think it is just incredible. Unfortunately, one of my lockdown tasks has not been to become fluent in Italian, so I couldn’t actually understand what had been written. But I could still look at the incredible imagery. I loved the use of drawing in this, something I think you don’t often see in polished high-quality magazines, where it’s mainly photoshoots.
Now, my favourite I have received so far is Beauty Papers. I will not lie to you, I originally only ordered this because it has Harry Styles on the cover (love u hazza). However, I am so glad I got it. The imagery in this magazine is incredible and unlike what you would usually see in a magazine like Vogue. There is a whole array of different styles and medias, which opened my eyes to so many different routes I could explore and experiment with. Themes in imagery that some may see as taboo, or a little bit brash, but I think it’s so well executed as a whole that it all combines into a remarkable magazine.
I have a couple magazines on their way, including a baby zine by G_IRL which I’m very excited for. I have their previous issue which was filled with such incredible imagery from different women in a bunch of different styles and I don’t expect the zine to be anything less.
A nice new place for me to look to feel inspired by even when I’m at home. I highly recommend having a look into Beauty Papers and of course Vogue, and please recommend any of your fave magazines to me either on here, or through my Instagram! Happy magazine flicking!
