living in a pandemic

I’m not going to lie you, the life we’re living right now doesn’t seem real to me.it feels like a storyline of a film, and we’re just waiting for the aliens to arrive. But no, this is the reality of living in a pandemic.

If you’ve been living under a rock and somehow escaped all talk of COVID-19, better known as Coronavirus, then you need to know it’s taking over the world, and not in a fun supervillain way, an actual really serious, quite scary way. COVID-19 is a new illness that can affect your lungs and airways. It's caused by a virus called coronavirus. But the main problem is that we don’t have all the answers people are asking because it’s so new.

Like many, when Coronavirus was first talked about, people labelled it as ‘just the flu’ and it wasn’t anything to worry about. Boy, were we wrong. What absolutely infuriates me is that some people still have this attitude and are frolicking the streets touching every bus pole and door handle they can thinking it’s okay. These kinds of actions lead to the country being put into lockdown, which I don’t think we’re far away from. We need to think of others in a time of struggle and follow instructions given to us to self-isolate if we feel unwell. I’ve seen and heard of so many people having the symptoms of Corona (dry cough and fever) but refusing to self-isolate and going out in a club where hundreds of people are? It’s honestly so irresponsible and selfish. Listen to the NHS!!

Talking about selfishness, people are panic buying and it’s not okay. No pasta, no toilet rolls, all because Selfish Sandra has bought 32 toilet rolls and enough pasta to feed an entire country. It isn’t necessary!!!! I know it is a stressful time, but people just need to buy their usual weekly food shop because their excessiveness is causing many to go without. I’ve seen so many quite upsetting posts on social media revolving around elderly people and not being able to buy sanitisation products for their ill partners, can’t carry the heavy weight of a multipack of toilet rolls but it being the only ones left, or have some potatoes for their evening meal. People are forgetting to be kind. So many people struggle in these times of need, especially the elderly, because they just can’t get to the shops as quick as the rest of us, or go shop to shop trying to find the one item they need because they don’t have the mobility. So, think, when you’ve got the last 7 packets of spaghetti in your hand, do you really need it?

Lastly, make sure you keep yourself happy and healthy. If you feel a bit under the weather and have a new cough gracing your windpipes, stay inside. I know it’s annoying to, but for the sake of your health as well as so many others, please, stay inside. I’ve developed a bit of a cough and although it is starting to get better, I haven’t gone outside in case it isn’t as harmless as I think.

To avoid catching or spreading Coronavirus:

- wash your hands with soap and water often – do this for at least 20 seconds (sing happy birthday twice or view the photo below as another example, guess the reference)

- always wash your hands when you get home or into work

- use hand sanitiser gel if soap and water are not available

- cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when you cough or sneeze

- put used tissues in the bin immediately and wash your hands afterwards

- try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell

Don’t:

- do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean

- try not to travel or go anywhere you don't have to, if you can stay inside, stay inside

I know these times can be quite stressful and evoke a lot of anxiety and paranoia, which is why we need to look out for each other and keep everyone safe. Take the time you’ll be inside as a time to start a new hobby, read that book you’ve always wanted to but never had the time to, or simply bake a nice cake. Anything you want, just make sure you’re indoors.

Be kind to one another and keep yourselves as healthy as possible.
