step up, us vogue

Scrolling through my twitter feed, I came across a tweet that really made me stop and think.

This is something I think I have been unconsciously aware of. I tend to send myself tweets with inspirational images of fashion and magazine covers. As I scrolled through my messages, a lot of them were covers of Vogue from all across the world, except American Vogue. American Vogue is centred around celebrities, especially for covers, because that tends to be what sells the most. However, this can get boring. We see the same famous faces everywhere; on our TVs, magazines, all over social media.

september 2019
july 2019

In my opinion, I think these covers are a bit dull. The colours don’t pop, and the poses are something we have seen time and time again. Nothing too original and essentially, wouldn’t excite me enough about that edition.

International covers of Vogue seem to be taking a step out of the box of doing shoots just to get sales and taking a risk and creating some really incredible photographs. So, I found a few of my favourite editions and their unbelievable photoshoots.

vogue arabia:

december 2019
december 2019

I honestly gasped when I saw these images, I think they are absolutely beautiful. The model’s skin with the gold is stunning. The elements of luxury and pure beauty are undeniable. Breath-taking.

vogue korea:

may 2019
december 2016

I really like the contrast of the light and dark sides of the May 2019 edition. I think it’s also good to see Vogue Korea using Korean models, as all ethnicities should be celebrated for their beauty. The second image is from a series of photographs by Cho Gi Seok for an exhibition for Swarovski, showcasing crystallised headpieces. I love the light on the model’s face with the rich deep colours of the background and garment.

vogue italia:

december 2015
september 2019

In the December 2015 edition, photographed by Tim Walker (love u Tim), I looovveeeee the quite simple composition for Walker, but the combination of the slightly wacky shape choice of eyeshadow and ice blue eyes really pleases me, with the contrast and the orangey red lip. The September edition is something I really want to try myself. The collage style of the cover is really nice, and I like the lighter background with the darker tone of the model’s skin, making her the focus amongst the flowers.

vogue ukraine:

march 2019
july 2019

I’ve seen the March 2019 cover before on Twitter and fell in love with it then and by rediscovering it again, I fell in love with it twice over. The simple addition of the paper cut out really adds an interesting effect on the image and makes the blue of the sky pop more. And the July 2019 edition. WOW. The colours. The model. Everything. I think it just works so well and it would most definitely make me pick this edition up.

vogue portugal:

january 2017
may 2019
june 2019
october 2019

Some of my favourite photographs from Vogue come from Portugal. The glittery makeup of January 2017 but with the slight blurred effect is where it is taken to the next level, it isn’t a simple shot of the model’s makeup, another element of interest is added. The models’ positions of the May and June 2019 editions is something I think US Vogue just doesn’t do. Not just a celebrity smouldering at the camera. They’re stepping outside the box and making Vogue fun. Something about the edition from October 2019 captures my attention; the fur, the golden jewellery, the Vogue tattoo. This love is the same for many of their covers.

So, step up US Vogue. Your international sisters are doing it so much better.
