Fragrance communication can be difficult, it tangible, invisible, and so very subjective. Stories are part of human nature and create an understandable hook that we all can relate to. This is why the story of a fragrance is so important. I picked a flamingo as my animal to create a fragrance around, following a similar style to Zoologist’s fragrances and scent stories.
I first brainstormed the smells that came to mind when thinking about a flamingo, literally as well as their connotations. I decided to take the scents of somewhere exotic and tropical, the smell of warmth, an undertone of salt, with a sweetness of candy floss. I think this captured the smell of a flamingo in literal terms as well as being a bit more imaginative.
I thought about the qualities of a flamingo and what kind of character I could create. I felt like they’re quite sassy birds, so I decided to create a persona of a glamorous flamingo. I watched a video of a flamboyance of flamingos and a special kind of dance they do when they’re looking for a mate, so I thought it would be quite nice to include the dance in my scent story, as well as the sociable factor. Also, quite obviously, I thought I should play up the pink of their feathers and focus on that in my moodboard.
I wrote my scent story first so I could see exactly where my moodboard should follow.
I drew the little flamingo character wearing sunglasses and a pearl necklace to ramp up the glamour. I also came up with the slogan ‘Single and Ready to Flamingle’ which could have been used as the name of the fragrance.
I went with a pink aesthetic for my moodboard to match the colour of a flamingo, with images of sand, water, and tropical locations, with pink materials and textures. I was trying to link the flamingo’s natural environment with the sass and glamour I had come up with. I think I should have put the images together in a different way because in my opinion it looks a little boring and basic. Maybe I should have cut out more images than having it all background images with the main focus of the one flamingo drawing. I really liked this task because it really put me in the mindset of fragrance and showed the importance of storytelling. I want my own fragrance brand to have a fun and memorable story. It’s important to allow space for newness, the story of animals that Zoologist have created allows room for more to be created, to be able to continue with a collection. I want to think more creatively when creating my moodboards, cutting images out and layering them over key backgrounds.
